Who Are Adult Protective Services (APS)?

The Texas Adult Protective Services is a government program that protects elderly adults and adults with disabilities. Any adult who has a developmental disability, mental or physical illness, or is aged 65 or older and experiences abuse, neglect, or exploitation can receive adult protection services.

This program offers food, transportation, short-term shelter, medical care, home healthcare services, and mental health services to victims in need. Aged individuals who are isolated are most at risk for abuse and exploitation.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has resource centers such as the APS Silver Star Resource Rooms for caseworkers that provide goods and assistance to those in need. The resource rooms operate like a store in a 24-hour-a-day operation to provide emergency necessities such as adult diapers, toiletries, dietary supplements, and more for the abused and neglected.
 
Know the Signs of an Abused Adult:
 
Abuse: Visual injuries such as burns, bruises, cuts, bedsores. Sexual misconduct, verbal and psychological abuse are causes for action.
 
Neglect: Unsanitary living conditions, no personal hygiene, no necessities such as running water, electricity, and medical care.
 
Exploitation: Victims of fraud, scamming, or misuse of resources. Individuals taking advantage of someone’s SSI checks, or individuals taking advantage of an aging or disabled adults’ cognitive decline.

The protection and safety of vulnerable individuals who are diagnosed with disabilities, mental illness, or developmental disorders is everyone's business. Most of us know of an isolated aged individual, whether it's a neighbor, coworker, friend, or family.
